Sunni: Leadership of the community is not a birthright, they also believed thet Muhammad had no rightful heir and that a religious leader should be elected by vote among the Islamic community.

Shia: Imam is sinless by nature, his authority is infallible, Shia muslims believe that just as a prophet is appointed by God, only God has the authority to appoint a successor to his prophet.
