There are many reasons that are looked upon as the cause of fall of Portuguese Empire in India.

● after the death of Albuquerque, no strong person was sent to India by the Portuguese, this was the first step in the disintegration of Portuguese Empire in India.

● The salaries of the officers in Portuguese administration was very low thus, officers readily took bribes making the administration system was corrupt.

● Portuguese introduced Inquisition into India and committed attrocities on people who were not Christians. In this way, their religious policies were also responsible for the downfall of the empire.

● The establishment of Mughal Empire is also considered one of the main reasons for downfall of the Portuguese.

● In 1580, Portugal came under the control of Spain and as a result of that influence of Portugal decreased on India.
