The British refused to grant the pension to Nana Saheb, the adopted son of Peshwa Baji Rao 2, on the grounds of the doctrine of lapse. He was also not allowed to ascend the throne. This hurt the sentiments of Hindus and the subject of Peshwas. Nana Saheb inherited enormous wealth which he used in sending emissaries to gather support for the revolt.
