The Battle of Plassey was a decisive confrontation between the British East India Company (EIC) versus the French Compagnie des Indes Orientales (CIO) and its ally, the Nawab of Bengal. (Nawab was the equivalent of the English honorific title “Duke”)

Some preface: In the 1700s, many trading companies in Asia grew in power as the formal European governments had little enforcement nor authority in the far-off regions of the world. Thus, these trading companies (like the EIC or the CIO), either via joint stock (EIC) or a royal charter (CIO), established themselves as monopolies, controlling much of the trade in their Asian spheres of influence and even running their own armies.

Just like what the British had done in the Americas, they set up alliances with local Nawabs (dukes), which often times ran various provinces in India due to the rather decentralized form of government at the time. Whereas the Dutch and the Portuguese ceased any hostilities with the British, the French, long time archenemies, still posed a significant threat to British trade
