Causes of the Conflict:

  • The Cholas had conflict with Srivijaya because Cholas send their trade vessels through waterways that were under Srivijaya, and Srivijaya kingdom had a monopoly over naval trade.
  • So, Cholas were forced to pass through their naval choke points i.e. Malacca and Sunda Strait or were otherwise plundered.
  • One more reason to have a conflict was the alliance of Tambralinga kingdom and Srivijaya kingdom.
  • In order to remove this obstacle, Cholas attacked Srivijaya in 1025 and conquered over Palembang and slowly the rest of its kingdom.
