(1) The oppressive and dictatorial regime of Tsar Nicolas II had created widespread resentment among the Russians.
(2) The setbacks suffered by Russia in the First World War were a major cause. A large number of Russians died during the war. People wanted the Tsar to withdraw from the war but it didn’t happen. This made the people angry.
(3) There was an acute shortage of essential commodities in Russia during the war as all the able-bodied men were sent to the warfront which resulted in a shortage of labour and thus, production suffered.
(4) The economic crisis in Russia, widespread inflation and famine added fuel to the fire and forced the Russians to overthrow the incapable government of the Tsar.
