Natural disasters like floods, drought, and epidemics like a plague, etc were rampant before independence of India. Also, food and healthcare facilities were scarce. Both of these reasons are responsible for flow growth rate of population in India before independence.

EXPLANATION:

  • Food scarcity was one of major problems of pre-independent India, due to poverty and poor productivity of food all people were not able to have an adequate food supply, result of this was a large number of deaths related to hunger.
  • Also, there were periodic floods and droughts which led to widespread famines in which thousands of people perished. People also died due to diseases like plague, leprosy, etc.
  • They did not have any access to healthcare and also there was high infant mortality and maternal mortality rate.
  • The atrocities of British government were also one of reasons for high death rate.
  • That's why death date was high and birth rate was low this, in turn, led to  slow growth rate of population.
  • But, after independence, all these issues were minimized and hence, there was a high rate of population growth post-independence.
