This is a widely debated topic, with many Historians giving many theories on how the Indus Valley Civilization declined. Here are some of those famous theories, which I think is accurate-

•) The Aryan Invasion theory: This theory posits that, the Indus Valley Civilization declined due to an Invasion from an Indo European tribe. This tribe came from Central Asia, and replaced the IVC influence in North Western India. This theory cannot be neglected, as excavations have found skulls and other fossils in the IVC area. So, there is a possibility of a violent invasion.

•) Climate change: This is another famous theory, which states that the Harappan Civilization declined due to climate change. At around 2000 BC, there was a change in the climate and weather conditions, which caused the summer monsoons to gradually dry up. This made agriculture difficult. This difficulty in agriculture, was likely the reason why the Harappans migrated to other places across the Indian subcontinent.

•) Floods: It has also been reported that there were many floods at that time, in Indus Valley Civilizations. These floods, were caused by the Indus rivers, and with these continuous floods the people were forced to migrate. This can be true, as it has been discovered that there were silt clay which covers the now collapsed houses of the Indus Valley Civilization.

•) Earthquakes: The place in which the Harappan Civilization originated was prone to earthquakes. These continous earthquakes destroyed the buildings of the Harappans. It is entirely possible, that these earthquakes led to the decline of Indus Valley Civilization.

These are the most famous theories, which could have caused the decline of the Indus Valley Civilization. I personally believe that it was a combination of all the causes mentioned above.
