Explanation:

Indigo rebellion of 1859-60 was a powerful peasant protest.It was a program of non corporation with the planters.The reason for this protest was that the indigo cultivators were not free to sow other crops,even if they were he could not because he found that the indigo crop has exhausted the fertility of soil.Cultivating indigo was a labour intensive job.There came a time when peasants had no option but to revolt.

The collapse of indigo production in Bengal was caused by the following circumstances:

a. Ryots’ denied producing the indigo anymore

b. Protests started taking place by the peasants/ ryots supported by the zamindars

c. Following the protests, the Indigo Commission was constituted by the government which accepted the faults of the planters and asked the planters to stop the cultivation.

d. Planters eventually moved out of the city
