The condition of the peasants of the Third Estate in the French society was very poor. During the Old Regime, peasants made up 90% of the population and had less than 40% of the land. The Third Estate had to pay taxes levied by the state and the church. During the 1800s, due to increase in population, the production could not keep pace and thus the prices of grains increased with the tax. Poor people and peasant were no longer able to buy bread. The rising taxes and prices with the bad harvest brought food riots and the Third Estate came under a subsistence crisis.
