The conditions of Russia during WW1 was very poor. The large bulk of workers were living in poverty or were unemployed.

There was political unstability as Bolsheviks were gaining power in Petrograd. In the royal court as well, a mystic called as Rasputin was rumored to be controlling the policies.

The army was suffering huge losses in the Eastern front. Specially, encounters such as Battle of Tannenberg, left heavy Russian casualties. Progress made after the Brusilov Offensive was not very impressive.

Overall, the situation was very dire.
