At great cost, overall Napoleon advanced the ideals of the French Revolution, although some of his rule undermined those ideals. Promotions in his armies were based on merit, not ancestry, and Napoleon's own success showed that impoverished people could advance in society.

Napoleon stuck by the ideals of the revolution: "liberty, equality, fraternity". Specifically equality regarding the emigres. Napoleon crowned himself emperor and therefore he thought of himself as an absolute ruler, thinking only for himself and not in the best interest of his people.
