The year 1871 saw the end of Indian treaty-making.

Indian Appropriation Act: The act forbids the acknowledgement of an Indian nation or tribe as an independent nation.

It also restricts the tribes signing a contract with the United states.

Consequences:

  • 368 Indian treaties from 1778 to 1868 were honored by the congress party as an effect of this act.
  • The American Indian countries were also not considered to be one of the domestic and dependent tribes.
  • The government paid for moving Plains Indians onto reservations.
  • The hunting lands were reduced and agriculture farming began to increase.
