Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was a great Indian philosopher, a renowned diplomat and a teacher. He was the first Vice President of India and the second President of India. As a tribute to this great teacher his birthday 5th September is commemorated as Teachers Day through out the country. When his students requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday, he asked them to celebrate the day as Teachers Day, honoring the contribution of the teachers towards the community. His respect for the teaching profession and his contribution towards the Indian education system is memorable across the country.

Professional Life

In 1918, Dr. Radha Krishnan was appointed as the Professor of Philosophy in the University of Mysore. Three years later, he was appointed as a Professor to King George V Chair of Mental and Moral Science in the University of Calcutta. He represented the University of Calcutta at the International Congress of Philosophy at the Harvard University in September 1926. In 1929, he took the post of principle in Manchester College, Oxford. He is one of the most influential scholars of comparative religion and philosophy and is said to have built a bridge between the East and the West. In 1939, he was elected Fellow of the British Academy. From 1939 to 48, he served as Vice-Chancellor of the Banaras Hindu University. He held offices regarding India’s national and international affairs.

Awards

In 1931, Dr. RadhaKrishnan received a knighthood, in 1954 he received Bharat Ratna and in 1963 he was awarded the Order of Merit. Dr. Radhakrishnan also served as the Ambassador of India to U.S.S.R. during 1949-52. He was also a member of the Constituent Assembly of India. He was the leader of the Indian delegation to UNESCO during 1946-52. He held the office of the Chancellor, University of Delhi, from 1953-62. Dr. Radhakrishnan became the President of India and served till May 1967. He used the academic title ‘Doctor’ throughout his life.

Works

Dr. RadhaKrishnan wrote a number of books during his lifetime. Some of the well known books are The Hindu View of Life, Religion and Society, The Idealist View of Life, Eastern Religions and Western Thought and A Source Book in Indian Philosophy. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was one of the most celebrated writers in modern India. He has left his work on myriad of subjects including philosophical, ethical, theological, social and cultural subjects. He also made valuable contributions to some of the reputed international journals. His articles are of immense value and the depth of his writings still amazes the readers today.
