Mendeleev concentrated on various compounds formed by the elements with Hydrogen andOxygen. Among physical properties, he observed the relationship between the atomic masses of various elements while creating his periodic table.

Mendeleev used atomic mass of the elements as the unique criteria of the elements. He proposed that the chemical properties of elements are the periodic function of their atomic masses. And thus, he arranged the elements in the increasing order of their atomic masses.
He used the following two properties:
1. Elements are arranged in increasing order of their Atomic mass
2. Similarity of chemical properties (which he selected as the important factor in arranging elements). i.e. the element with similar chemical properties should be in the same group.
