Mendeleev's periodic table was based on the observation that properties of the elements are a periodic function of their atomic masses.

This means that if elements are arranged in the increasing order of their atomic masses, then elements with similar properties get their place in the same group in a successive increasing order of atomic masses.

MENDELEEV'S PERIODIC TABLE

According to Mendeleev's periodic table, the properties of element of a periodic function of their atomic masses.

In other words, if elements are arrange in the order of increasing atomic masses then, the properties of elements are repeated after regular interval or periods.

Criteria used by Mendeleev in creating his periodic table:-

▪ There are 7 periods( horizontal rows ) and eight groups (vertical column) in the original periodic table of Mendeleev.

▪ Mendeleev started with 63 elements, 6 periods and eight groups. he studied period of all 63 elements and placed in 8 groups.

▪ according to property and atomic mass he left some place for undiscovered elements and elements were easily replaced in groups without disturbing existing order.

▪ Mendeleev placed a few element in the wrong order of their atomic masses by keeping the element with higher atomik mass fast and element with low atomic mass later.
