Mendeleev classified the 63 elements in the periodic table based on increasing order of their atomic masses.

He divided his periodic table into 8 groups(columns) and 7 periods(rows).

He left blank spaces in his periodic table stating that some elements that weren't yet discovered shall be occupying those places.

Ex: Eka-aluminium which was later discovered to be Gallium

Mendeleev's Periodic Law - The physical and chemical properties of elements are a periodic function of their atomic masses.

Elements with similar chemical properties were placed in a group. He suggested that the properties of the elements are periodic functions of their atomic masses. This was known as periodic law. The arrangement of the elements in increasing order was called a periodic table.
