The demands made by the Sri Lankan Tamils were as follows: To recognise Tamil language as an official language. Regional autonomy Equality of opportunities in securing education and jobs. An independent state – Tamil Eelam – in northern and eastern parts of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lankan Tamils’ commenced their struggle by launching their political parties for the;
(i) Recognition of Tamil as a formal language and provincial autonomy.
(ii) Equality of opportunity in obtaining guidance and jobs.
In order to object for their demand, they commenced a political contest in the form of conflict with the management.
(iii) By 1980s the various political organization was formed obliging an autonomous Tamil Elam (State) in northerly and eastward parts of Sri Lanka.
(iv) The distrust among the two communities transformed into a comprehensive struggle which shortly turned into a civil war.
But their interests were frequently rejected by the Sinhalas and soon it transformed into a civil war. As a result, thousands of people of rich populations have been annihilated and caused a disastrous set back to the human, cultural and commercial life of the country.
