The following are the reasons that led to the launching of the Civil Disobedience Movement:

In the year 1928, there came the Simon Commission in India. It came with the purpose to keep a check on the constitutional arrangement in India. The people of India along with some political leaders such as M.K. Gandhi and Mohammad Ali Jinnah boycotted this commission as it had no Indian member. Moreover, in 1929 Nehru directed the Indian National Congress and declared 'Poorna Swaraj' as its central purpose. This resulted in nationalist enthusiasm in the people of the country. As the feeling of nationalism began to develop in the people, Gandhi addressed a letter to Lord Irwin in 1930 asking him to fulfil all the eleven demands mentioned in the letter. However, when Lord Irvin refused to accept these demands Gandhi ejected the Civil Disobedience Movement in India.
