The alvars were poet saints from tamil nadu.they worshipped lord vishnu and his different avtars like lord krishna.they existed in 4200 bce to 2700 bce.they used to sing mythological songs for lord vishnu.
on the other hand the nayanars were devotees of lord shiva.they were in the 6th century to 8th century.they used to sing songs for lord shiva.
