1. Effects of the rising of 1857: The English crushed the uprising of 1857 and committed great atrocities .The English began to hate the Indians.This revolt has created national feelings and political consciousness among the people of India.

2. Administrative and political unity of India: They setup a strong central government .They established a uniform system of administration. This created political unity in India.

3. Western thought and Education: The western thought and education created the spirit of nationalism among the Indians. English Language gave to India a common language for political thinking and action. It acted as common language to link the people together.

4. Racial Arrogance of the Rulers: They considered themselves superior to the Indians. They were not allowed to travel in the same compartment in a train with the Europeans.The racial superiority of the rulers created bitterness among the Indians.

5. Rediscovery of India’s past: Foreign scholars like sir William Jones, Max Muller etc made historical researches and rediscovered India’s glorious past. Indians began to take pride in their culture and civilization .
