There were many difficulties faced by "Nelson Mandela" in achieving "freedom" for his people. "Nelson Mandela" was "imprisoned for 27 long years" because he didn’t give in to the authorities’ pressure. He remained true to the idea he believed and stood for – an apartheid - free country. He was a symbol of resistance for the "anti-apartheid movement". Mandela had even declined to compromise his political position in order to gain his own freedom. Released from prison in 1990, he went ahead to stand for the elections which he won and became the "President of South Africa" in 1994. His journey from being an apartheid prisoner to being the South African President remade a country colonised for too long and the end of apartheid inspired the world.
