The Sri Lankan Civil War was a militia conflict fought on the archipelago of Sri Lanka. Starting on 23 July 1983, there was an occasional insurgency upon the government by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam the LTTE, also recognized as the Tamil Tigers, which strived to build an autonomous Tamil state termed as Tamil Eelam in the Northland and the east of the archipelago. After a 26-year armed campaign, the Sri Lankan army crushed the Tamil Tigers in May 2009, which put the civil war to an end.

The Sri Lankan government now formally proclaimed an end to the 25-year civil war after the soldiers took command of the entire land and shot the leader of the Tamil Tigers.
