The Maasai civil wars were fought between Kwavi Maasai and the pastoral Maasai. It should be noted that pastoral Maasai always despised the Kwavi Maasai who were farmers. The wars were fought in intervals.

The first major war broke out in 1815 in the Uasin - Gishu plateau, caused by the pastoral Masaai’s claims that the agricultural Maasai (Kwavi) were finishing land and that very soon they (the pastoral Maasai) would have no grazing lands. The decisive battles ended in the defeat of the Kwavi Maasai who were finally driven out of Uasin - Gishu plateau.

The second wave of wars broke out in 1840. The defeated Kwavi reorganized themselves, with the help of Laikipia, and the Maasai of the Naivasha and managed to attack the Purko Maasai in the rift valley, driving them out.

However, the Purko with their allies managed to attack the Kwavi Maasai decisively defeating and killing many of them between 1870 and 1875.
