The British came to India through trade. After the arrival of the Dutch and Portuguese, the British entered to trade spices, textiles and other goods from India to European markets.
Soon, the British developed some factories and turned them into presidencies. Finally they started to annex and control India part by part.
They used three strategies to bring India to control. They were Subsidiary Alliances, Doctrine of Lapse and Annexations
SUBSIDIARY ALLIANCE
In this system an Indian ruler had to maintain British troops in his kingdom either by giving some of his territory or paying for the maintainence of the troops. This made the British to have a large army at the expense of local rulers. The.Indian ruler cannot fight or sign treaties.
ANNEXATIONS
Annexations means to take control of a neighbouring territory. Firstly the British took virtual control of the state by protecting the ruler. Then it made the rulers not to uphold large armies even for self protection. Then the British collected taxes and the order and law for the state deteriorated. The British then annexed the state.
DOCTRINE OF LAPSE
Traditionally in India if a ruler did not have a natural heir, it was a practice to adopt one. But the British refused to recognize such adoptions. So when an Indian ruler cannot rule the territory anymore, it was not passed on to the adopted child but to the British. Satara, Nagpur and Jhansi were annexed through this method.
