Answer:

During her successful 1971 run, Indira Gandhi, India's prime minister is found guilty of electoral corruption. Despite calls for resignation, Gandhi refused to leave India's top office and later declared the country's martial law when public protests threatened to overthrow her government. The first prime minister of the independent republic of India, Gandhi was a daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru. When she was elected to the executive body of the Congress Party in 1955, she became a national political figure. She was the party president in 1959 and appointed in 1964 to an important position in the ruling government of Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.

Lal Bahadur Shastri died in January 1966, and Gandhi became a Congress Party Leader and thus India's prime minister. Soon after becoming India's first female head of government, Gandhi was challenged by the Congressional right wing and won a narrow victory during the election of 1967.

In 1971, the ruling Indian chief secured a resounding election victory over the opposition. That year, in favor of establishing Bangladesh, she ordered India's invasion of Pakistan, which earned her greater popularity, leading her New Congress Party to a messy victory in 1972 national elections.
