Formal apartheid existed from 1948 to about 1990, pretty much the same period as the entire cold war.
People's experiences of the 1950s will naturally differ from the 1980s.
Also, pervasive as apartheid was, it was still only government policy and people's lives were defined far more by the normal mundane aspects of their lives than what old white men were doing in Pretoria.
People were generally scared.

Where I lived you never saw any actual violence, but there was tons of it on the news.
