What were the general conditions in the chawls?

Chawls are the housing buildings . They came in bombay, well known as  mumbai. They came in 1900. They came for make economic things available. They live in small houses. These are houses which have common area for life purposes. They were having small kitchens, so they were having problem. Water resources were also shared between them.

1. Chawls were multi-storied structures built built and owned by private landlord’s  merchant’s bankers and building contractors. Who were looking for quick ways of earning  money from the anxious migrants.

2. Each chawl was divided into smaller one room tenements which had no private toilets.

3. Many families could reside at a time in a tenement.

4. People had to keep the windows of their rooms closed even in humid weather due to  close proximity of filthy gutters, buffalo stables, etc.

5. Though water was scarce, and people often quarreled every morning for a turn at the  tap observers found that houses were kept quite clean.
