India in 1857 was a disturbing time as there was a rebellion which took place. This uprising slowly turned into a civilian rebellion against the British owned company. The unrest in India was seen as the first of several events to occur before India achieved its independence in 1947.

The grievances of the Indian Sepoys against the British rule before the revolt of 1857 came due to the following reasons: -
I. They were treated very roughly and rewarded very less payment.
II. Their deep trust in traditions made them face many social limitations. The new rules violated their religious sentiments and beliefs.
III. They were severely punished for not obeying the British and this was the very disappointing situation which they were facing.
IV. Difficulty in getting leave: - They faced difficulty in getting leave from Britishers.
V. The policy of racial discrimination adopted by the British officers in terms of physical abuse, promotion, pension and terms of service.
