As mentioned, Christopher Columbus was not wealthy. This meant that someone had to give him the ships on his journey. Firstly, he went to the Portugese, who were the naval major force of Europe in the time. They rejected. Next, he went to the Italian, where King Henry said "No" to Columbus's request. When he asked the royals of Spain, Queen Isabella told him to "Wait until the War is Over". Christopher had to hold onto his values and believe that he would be able to reach his goals one day. He waited for years.

The wind does not always blow, and using the technology during the time, it would be impossible to sail. Columbus solved this by spending hours to calculate the best route and he was determined that by travelling at a certain latitude, he should get reliable amounts of wind.

The sailors got excited as Columbus told them they would all become wealthy. However, they were unsettled because despite the wind blew and the journey was smooth, as they did not see land, The crew became afraid. After the 4th week, they wanted to turn around. They were also very superstitious, not only thinking that the earth was flat, but these people also believed that sea monster would attack them, and they believed in other far fetched tales. They got restless. Columbus was smart and reinforced discipline. He offered large reward to the first man who saw land. They all got attentive and Christopher Columbus was able to keep the purpose of the journey on focus.

Scurvy was also a problem. In the time, there were no refrigerators that you could carry on board. Thus, the sailors could not eat any fresh vegetables and fruit, resulting in a lack of vitamin C. This was thankfully solved when they arrived at South America, a land where many tropical fruits grew.

On his first voyage, Columbus's ship Santa Maria (the larger ship) wrecked off the coast. On the single Nina, there was limited space. This lead to him sacrifising 40 men on the base of a fort called Navidad, who caused some conflicts between themselves and the tribes.Through his deal with the King and Queen of Spain, Christopher Columbus was made governor and viceroy for the land he found. However, Columbus was selfish and always wanted to find ways to get things for himself. His authority was conflicted and many accused him of abusing power. He was arrested and held in jail after his 3rd voyage. King Ferdinand II released him and agreed to fund one more voyage.

In 1503, 12 Spaniards were killed by a force of 400 natives (this was during his last voyage). This was one of the first most significant conflicts developed. Columbus was shipwrecked on the island and he marooned in Jamaica for a year. The natives helped solve this problem by providing them with food and water, as well as a paddle boat that they used to get to Hispaniola for help.

These are just many of the hardships Columbus and his crew needed to face. However, intelligent and ambitious Columbus was able to face these problems and find a solution out of many trick situations. He never gave up his hope to find a route to Asia and never lost his values for sailing. Support from other members of the society was also as equally crucial to Columbus, and thus despite his eccentric ideas in court(e.g. he believed that once the Spanish united the world under Christianity, which they would soon quickly be able to do by getting gold and wealth from the new world, the World would end), he had remain good relationships with the people holding authority.
