Nationalism and the wish for a constitutional state, either a constitutional Kingdom or a republic. Sometimes these ideas went together, sometimes not. However, nationalism had already started just before the Revolution. And a constitutional monarchy had long ago been declared in late 17th century Britain under King William III and Queen Mary. There were a few other democratic monarchies around but they were rather obscure.A Republic had never been a big success outside Switzerland. Genoa and Venice were decaying aristocratic republics where the nobles called the shots. And the Netherlands were officially a Republic but more a hybrid with a monarchy because of the House of Orange. Poland-Lithuania had an elected King and was officially the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, not the First Polish Republic. This all started to change, but not a full 100 % for the better..
