Political ideas that motivated political movements in France and the rest of Europe are:
- Liberalism: Derived from the Latin word Libes meaning free. Liberalism talked about the concept of government by consent, and to privileges of higher classes.
- Nationalism: Early 16th and 17th century Europe was bound by a parochial vision of a kingdom, community, religion, etc. The ideas of nationalism began to emerge with paintings and folk songs that showed nation as a collective term.
- Equality: Europe and France in particular was divided into 3 classes known as estates- The Clergy, Nobles, and the rest of the population. The Clergy and Nobles had control over most of the resources and powers and all exploitation was for the third estate like heavy taxes, and poverty. The idea of equality motivated people to create a society that is just and equal. They gave equality before the law, voting rights, etc.
- Fraternity: The division of people along lines of class, money, etc. created conflicts. Fraternity emphasizes brotherhood and that the togetherness of all will strive the nation towards excellence.
- Justice: The idea of justice on the grounds of social, political, and economic pressed the idea that all are equal in the availing position of power, the same remuneration for the same work, and no discrimination between people.
