The immediate cause of the revolt was the introduction of the new Enfield rifle and the greased catridge. In loading the rifle, the sepoy had to bite off its top before inserting the catridge. It was believed that the grease used to coat these catridges was made from the fat of cows and pigs. This was not acceptable to the Hindus and Muslim religious sentiments alike.
