In December 1929, under the presidency of Jawaharlal Nehru, the Lahore Congress formalised the demand of 'Purna Swaraj' or full independence for India. It was declared that 26 January 1930, would be celebrated as the Independence Day when people were to take a pledge to struggle for complete independence

It was in the Lahore session of 1929 when the president of Congress party-Nehru declared 26th January ,1930 as the date when India will get complete freedom or "Purna Swaraj".It was decided that 26th January would be celebrated as Independence Day,but unfortunately we got our actual freedom on 15th august,1947.The Lahore session of the Congress held in 1929 was known as the historical sessionbecause of the following reasons: 1.The aim of the Indian National Congress was to attain complete independence or 'Poorna Swaraj'. 2.Jawaharlal Nehru was sworn in as the new President of the Congress.
