The most important 'development of the medieval period' in India was the 'birth' of a new common language called Urdu. Under the Delhi Sultans and the Mughal emperors, Persian was the court language.  

The familiar language of the people living in Delhi and the neighboring territories was Hindi.  

By continuous intermingling of these two languages, a mixed language grew up. It was originally called Zaban-i-Hindavi or the languages of the Indians.
