the main causes of the decline of forests during the colonial period were-

- the spread of railways created a new demand of timber. wood was needed as fuel for the locomotives. wooden sleepers were needed to hold the tracks together. around 2000 sleepers were needed for a length of a mile i.e., 1.6 km.

- the shipbuilding became problem for the British royal navy with the disappearance of Oak forests in england. this causes the large cutting of trees in India because timber was supplied to England from India.

- the setup of plantations like tea and coffee resulted in the cutting of trees.

- the agricultural expansion resulted in cutting of trees for the land for cultivation.
