While many Chilean women have been organizing against Chile's military junta since the mid-1970s, other women have been actively working for that regime. This is difficult for feminists to acknowledge. But by analyzing exactly how, and why, General Augusto Pinochet has used the ideology of femininity to sustain his “doctrine of national security” we can deepen our understanding of the ways that militarization is reliant on patriarchy. This paper analyzes both the Pinochet regime's discourse on femininity and the activities of women's organizational arms of that regime in the 1980s.
