The main points of electromagnetic wave theory were :

When an electrically charged particle moves under acceleration, alternating electrical and magnetic fields are produced and transmitted. These fields are transmitted in the form of waves. These waves are called electromagnetic waves or electromagnetic radiations.

Energy is emitted from a source continuously in the form of radiation and is called radiant energy.

The radiation consists of electric & magnetic fields oscillating perpendicular to each other and also perpendicular to the direction of propagation of radiation.

The radiation possesses wave character and travels with the speed of light (3×108 m/s).

These waves do not require any material medium for propagation.

The limitations of electromagnetic wave theory are :

This theory doesn’t explain the phenomenon of photoelectric effect.

It doesn’t explain the concept of black body radiation.

Electromagnetic wave theory does not explain the black body radiation phenomenon and the photoelectric effect, whereas Planck’s quantum theory does explain the black body radiation phenomenon and the photoelectric effect. According to electromagnetic wave theory, the energy is emitted or absorbed continuously, whereas, according to Planck's quantum theory, energy is emitted or absorbed discontinuously, i.e., in certain definite packets of energy called 'quanta'.
