In january 1857, a rumour started at Dum Dum cantonment (in Calcutta) that the cartridges were greased with the fat of animals, which was toboo for both Hindus and Muslims. the rumour spread like wildfire among the Hindus and Muslims sepoys and let to the revolt of 1857.
