Indian National Congress started in 1885 by A.O.Hume was mainly to use the organization as an intermediary. Britishers never wanted another 1856 to happen. Hence they created INC, where the local leaders can vent their ire. Also Britishers, have an agency to talk to and bring the situation under control.

The very leaders Dadabai Naoroji, Surendra Banergee, Gopalakrishna, Ghokale, etc., were went along with British government. Till 1915 Indian independence movement was in low profile. However Bengal Partition in 1905 and the total opposition to the same created a feeling that a movement against British rule is possible.

However 1918 Jallianwalka Bhag massacre culminated in churning the anger against British rule. After the massacre two developments happened. Two groups within Congress Extremists and Moderates developed. Lala Lajpat Rai, Vipin Chandra Paul, and Bala Gangadhar Tilak, got identified with extremists. Mahatma Gandhi, and others towed the line of moderates. Also sathyagraha, or ahimsa, became the main ammunition under M.K.Gandhi, to drive the British out.

The non-cooperation movement of 1920 was a great success. British were frustrated and could not control the agitations that were going on. They were at their wits end. Then one incident involving two Congress leaders Shoukat Ali,and Shoukat Ali, burnt a police station in a remote place in UP in retaliation to police excess. In the process two policemen died. Immediately Gandhi called off the movement in protest against the himsa. If the movement were to have continued for another month we would have got total independence in 1920 itself. This movement was the greatest one that happened before independence.

India achieved independence after great struggle in 1947. India supported Britain in WW II which helped in gaining independence. Also British realized that any further continuation will affect them more. Hence they gave swaraj.
