Subsidiary Alliance

Explanation

Lord Wellesley , the Governor General of India introduced the Subsidiary Alliance in 1798 in India.

The major provisions of the Subsidiary Alliance were:

  • An Indian ruler accepting this Alliance have to allow to keep the British Army in their territory.
  • the Indian State have to pay the maintenance cost to the British
  • the Indian ruler were not allowed to make any alliance with any Europeans and with any other Indian rulers without prior permission of the British.
  • Have to keep a British Officer in their courts
  • In return the British will protect their territory against any aggression.
  • The Nizam of Hyderabad was the first to accept the subsidiary Alliance. After him the Nawab of Awadh accepted this Alliance. The other Indian States accepting this Alliance were the kingdom of Mysore, Pesha, Bhonsle ,Scindhiya. The Holkar state of indore was the last Indian territory to accept this Alliance in 1818.
