Different social groups participated in non-cooperation movement but they responded to the call of swaraj in different ways. This is so because all these groups had different aspirations.

In the cities, thousands of students left government-controlled schools and colleges, headmasters and teachers resigned, and lawyers gave up their legal practices. The council elections were also boycotted in most of the provinces.

Foreign goods were burnt and liquor shops, picketed.

In the countryside, the struggles of peasants and tribals were drawn into the movement. For example, in Awadh, the movement here was against talukdars and landlords who demanded excessively high rents and a variety of other cesses from the peasants.

The plantation workers in Assam revolted against the Inland Emigration Act of 1859 and aspired for freedom to move freely in and out of the confined space in which they were enclosed.
