Answer:

Well being in the transport industry for the past 4 years I believe I can shed some light on the ongoing initiatives. However, this list will not be exhaustive one.

Within Cities: This is one of the most critical problematic areas in the modern times. The average speed on the roads within the city is just reducing day by day and the congestion is quite evident in tier I and tier II cities. I believe the government is focusing on improving the mass and medium mode of public transportation. A lot of new metros are being constructed in addition to the operation ones (~40 cities overall). The pace of construction is quite high and a lot of change can be expected in the next 2–3 years. In addition a lot of focus has been given on improving the bus transportation by addition of new buses and implementing ITS systems in all of them to provide reliable mode of transport. Apart from these there has been a focus on implementing traffic management systems which adaptes to the traffic conditions and optimises traffic signal timings.

Intercity: For this the government is working on all the fronts ranging from roads, railways and waterways. The pace of highway construction and their broadening work has drastically increased. A lot of work is happening in railways as well. The speed of the passenger trains are on the rise with the introduction of semi-high speed trains and ongoing construction of high speed rail networks. A major shift in the logistics industry is expected with the introduction of dedicated freight corridor and the parts of it are already getting commissioned. Apart from these two major mode of transports the airways industry in growing every year despite a few hiccups. The government is also focusing on improving ports for imports and exports as well experimenting with using waterways for within country travels.
