Robert Clarke designed an extension scheme in 1888 to de-clutter the area of  Chandani Chowk, known as the Lahore Gate Enhancement Scheme. The scheme provided more open market space for shops and homes. This was known as Clarkjung

Explanation:

  • In 1803, after the Marathas, the British took control of Delhi. The Mughal Emperor had been allowed to continue residing at the palace in the Redfort since the capital of British India was Calcuta.  It wasn't until 1911 when Delhi was the capital of British India that modernity we all know it.
  • It took almost 20 years to build New Delhi. The idea was to build a city in contrast to Shahjahanabad. No crowded mohallas, no mazes of narrow bylanes were to be found. In New Delhi big straight roads were set in the middle of vast settlements, lined with sprawling villas. By comparison to the anarchy of Old Delhi, the architects wanted New Delhi to be a sense of law and order.
  • A clean and healthy space must also be a new city. The British saw overcrowded areas as the root of illness, hygienic and unhealthy. It had to become green and have trees, parkland and fresh air, and an adequate supply of oxygen. This meant that the New Delhi system had to be better than the old city.
  • Robert Clarke planned an extension scheme in 1888 for the residents of the Walled City called the Lahore Gate Improvement Scheme. This was to lead the people of Old City away to a new marketplace, which would be constructed around the stores. Streets were strictly in line with the grid pattern in this redevelopment and were of equal width, size and character.
  • However, Clarkegunj ( as it was named) remained incomplete and did not lead to the de-congestion  of old town. Water sources and sanitation were very low even in 1912 in these new locations.
