The poet felt regret that he hit the snake he was not wishing to hit the snake but his education told him that the snakes see venomous and should be killed

'Snake' is a great poem penned by D.H.Lawrence.

At first, he seemed fortunate to have a snake as his visitor. But his educated judgment said that golden brown snakes are wild so hit the snake. After hitting the snake, the poet really assumes that his education has misguided him to kick such an inoffensive snake who was a guest to his water channel. He actually, by himself, didn't desire to hit that animal as it did nothing to him. But, his internal opinions of education which made him do so.
