these are some polices of the British that led to the discontent of India
Britain used India as a source of raw materials
for its industries. In turn it flooded Indian
markets with cheap goods from Britain. As
a result, Indian industries suffered a steep
decline and millions became jobless. The land
revenue systems introduced by the British
were another major cause of discontent.
The Permanent Settlement of Bengal fixed
the revenue at such high levels that not only
poor peasants but even zamindars found
it difficult to pay. The defaulters’ land was
taken away and these peasants became
landless and jobless and were driven to be
bonded labourers.
