The principles of society at Rameshwaram were rigid. The people belonging to their respective social groups were not allowed to mingle with one another. Each social group maintained its segregation from the others. Nonetheless, Kalam’s science teacher, Sivasubramania Iyer, though a strict Brahmin was against this segregation and wanted the people to mingle with another. One day he invited Kalam to his home for a meal.
