The merchants had to face a number of problems like pass through a number of dangerous forests and kingdoms.
Passing through the forests made them fearful of being robbed. For this reason, usually they formed guilds or travelled in caravans for protecting their interests.
Resultantly using their naval power the European Companies dominated the sea trade and the Indian traders were forced Indian traders to serve as their agents.
It would be not wrong to mention that these issues still exist today.
