Pottinger, their proposals were short lived and premature. It was an age of experiment and the Despatch of 1854marked a turning point in the Policy of Education in British India. Wood's Despatchcame to be known after the name of Sir Charles Wood who was the President of the Board of Control

1)Provision was made for a systematic method of education from the primary level to the university level.

2)An education department was to be set up in all provinces
3)In bombay,madras and calcutta ,universities were to be set up along the lines of london universities   
 4)Every district was to have one government school.
5)Grants-in-aid were to be given to private schools affiliated with the govt.
6) Indians were to be taught the mother tongue as well.
