there were many reasons, to be a few:
- the French rulers were the monarchy and they ruled the people and took a lot of taxes
- they and their nobles lived a luxurious life but he peasants lived a horrible life
- when famine came up the peasants had to starve to pay the taxes
- the rulers were very powerful and they killed democracy
